Lady Mules beat Littlefield Lady Cats 52-21

The Lady Mules opened the District 2-3A season with an impressive 52-21 win over the Lady Cats of Littlefield at home Tuesday evening.

The Lady Mules traveled to Idalou to play the transfer-rich Idalou Lady Cats and fell 36-71.
The Lady Mules are 1-1 in District 2-3A competition and traveled to Dimmitt to meet the Bobbies Tuesday evening and will host the Slaton Lady Tigers Friday, December 22.
The Lady Mules did not show their superiority over Littlefield until the final three periods. Yvonne Diaz finally knocked the top off the Lady Mules’ basket with a short jumper almost two minutes into the game. She added a second basket later in the quarter.
Brooke Garza scored twice in the paint. The Lady Mules trailed Littlefield 8-10 after one quarter.
The Lady Mules clamped down on the full-court press to cause the Lady Cats to turn the ball over. That gave the Lady Mules easy baskets. Anahi Barrera picked a Lady Cat’s pocket and drove to the hoop to crank the Lady Mules.
Brianna Barron chipped in a free throw and added a layup after a steal. Garza scored in the paint, and Alyssa Wheeler made a charity toss. Keely Dunham sank two free throws and made a short jump shot for four points in the first half.
The Lady Mules outscored the Lady Cats 12-3 in the second frame to take a 20-13 lead at the half.
Dunham opened the second half with a short jumper. She had an assist from Barron for a second hoop and added two free throws. Wheeler dropped in a 15-foot jump shot. A. Barrera sank a pair of charity tosses.
Kyndal Miller made all four of her free throws and Barron made a layup. Lilly Barrera chipped in a pair of free throws plus a couple of hoops. The Lady Mules outran Littlefield 21-4 to lead the Lady Cats 41-17 with one quarter left to play.
Dunham sank a free throw and added a basket in the final period. Cassidy Cage finished a fast break with a layup. L. Barrera sank a trey from the right wing, and Wheeler chipped in a free throw.
Dunham led the Lady Mules with 13 points. L. Barrera added nine points, and Garza dropped in six points. Barron finished with five points. A. Barrera, Wheeler, and Diaz made four points each. Cage chipped in two points in the win.
The Idalou Lady Cats jumped in front of the Lady Mules early and ran away with the game. Idalou outscored the Lady Mules 25-12 in the first period.
Wheeler scored first for the Lady Mules and added a second hoop later in the period. Diaz made a pair of hoops in the paint. Barron and Dunham sank a hoop each.
Miller made a free throw and a pair of hoops in the second period for five of the Lady Mule points in the quarter. Garza added a couple of charity tosses. The Lady Mules trailed Idalou 45-19 at the intermission.
L. Barrera drained a 3-pointer from the top of key two minutes into the third period. Dunham put back an offensive rebound for basket and Wheeler chipped in a free throw. Idalou led the Lady Mules 60-25 with eight minutes left to play.
The Lady Mules stayed even in the final period with both teams scoring 11 points each.
Wheeler hit a 15-foot jump shot and added a second basket in the last quarter. Dunham sank an eight-foot jumper. She chipped in a free throw before the game ended. Miller and Cage sank a pair of free throws each.
Wheeler led the Lady Mules with nine points. Dunham and Miller added seven points each. Diaz scored four points, and L. Barrera had three points. Cage, Barron, and Garza chipped in two points each.
The Lady Mules traveled to Dimmitt Tuesday night to play the Bobbies. The Lady Mules return home Friday evening to host the Slaton Lady Tigers December 22 for the final game of the 2017 season.
The Lady Mules will return to action January 5 when they travel to Friona to play the Squaws.
