Sudan Hornets’ Basketball

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team lost their final game of the Wildcat Classic on Saturday, 52-29, to the Happy Cowboys.
The Hornets went 0-3 in tournament play making their record, 2-15 coming into the new year.
The Cowboys opened the game on an, 11-0 scoring run, before Chris Schovajsa dropped in a lay-up for the Hornets to end the drought, drawing an and-one foul on Jackson Davis.
Schovajsa was unable to convert the free throw, making the score, 11-2, with just over four minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Davis scored a put-backand on their next possession, he was fouled on a third-chance attempt by Schovajsa. He split the free throws, but on the Cowboys’ next possession, Craigery Odom was fouled on an attempt by Bode Box. He converted both free throws, pushing their lead to, 16-2.
With 1:35 remaining in the first quarter, Schovajsa was fouled on an attempt by Cy Middleton; he converted both free throws and Christian Montes dropped in a lay-up for the Hornets, cutting the lead to, 16-6.
With under one minute to play in the quarter, Connor Sperry was fouled on an attempt by Ruben Rodriguez and made both free throws and then Sperry dropped in a runner from the right side, making the score, 20-6, as the first quarter came to a close.
Rodriguez got a circus shot to fall as he was fouled by Dylan Reyes to open the second quarter; he converted the throw, making the score, 20-9.
Odom scored a put-back and on their next possession, Middleton was fouled on an attempt by Montes. He made both free throws and Davis followed it up with a put-back off of the miss by Odom, extending their lead to, 26-9.
Happy took a time out with 2:40 remaining in the first half and out of the break, Call Morris knocked down a three from the top of the key for Sudan, trimming the lead to, 26-12.
Davis scored a put-back off of the miss by Middleton, but Montes responded with a lay-up for Sudan, drawing an and-one foul Davis. The free throw was no good, but with under one minute to play, Morris scored a put-back off of the miss by Rodriguez and with .1 seconds showing on the clock, Montes drained a three and was fouled on the play by Reyes.
The free throw was no good, as the Hornets went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Cowboys, 28-19.
Odom scored a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Sudan to open the third quarter. He converted the free throw for the three-point play, making the score, 31-19.
Parker Battin responded with a three for Sudan, but Odom and Middleton answered with back-to-back baskets for Happy, stretching their lead to, 35-22.
After a Happy time out, Odom scored a lay-up for the Cowboys, but Montes answered with a floater on the other side, making the score, 37-24.
Middleton dropped in a lay-up for Happy, but on the other end, Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Middleton; he split the free throws and Sperry heaved a pass over the top of the defense inside to Davis, who dropped it in for a lay-up to close out the third quarter with
Happy on top of Sudan, 41-25.
Davis opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Sperry and on their next possession, Davis was fouled on an attempt by Rodriguez. He made both free throws, making the score, 45-25.
Schovajsa scored a bucket for Sudan, but on the other end, Odom was fouled on an attempt by Montes; he made both free throws, extending their lead to, 47-27.
Sperry was fouled on the floor by Josh Leal in the double bonus; he converted both free throws, making the score, 49-27.
Rodriguez dropped in a tear drop in the lane for Sudan, but Sperry drained a three to close out the Hornets, 52-29.
The Hornets were led in scoring by Montes, who finished with nine points in the contest. Rodriguez and Schovajsa each netted six points, while Morris chipped in five points and Battin contributed three points in the contest.
The Hornets were at Meadow on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will host Wellman-Union on Friday for their final non-district game of the season.
