The freshmen Mules found it tough going Monday evening against the Shallowater Mustangs. Shallowater defeated the Mules 62-28.
Cesar Enriquez sank a trey from the top of the key to open the scoring. He was later fouled while shooting and made both free throws. Enriquez nailed his second trey of the first period before the buzzer sounding. The Mules trailed 19-8 after one quarter.
Kurt Rodriguez sank a 3-pointer from the right wing early in the second period. Joe Gutierrez drove the baseline and hit a teardrop shot that floated over the tall Mustang defenders. Victor Velasquez dropped in one free throw, and Gutierrez completed a delayed break to end the first half. The Mules trailed Shallowater 37-16 at the intermission.
Enriquez opened the second half with a free throw. Thirty seconds later he dropped in a trey from the top of the key. Gutierrez tipped in an offensive rebound for a basket. He then hit a short jumper from the right side. Enriquez was fouled driving to the hoop, and he sank one charity toss. The Mules trailed 52-25 with one period left to play in the game.
Gutierrez finished a fast break to open the final period. Enriquez sank one from the charity line to end Mule scoring.
Enriquez paced the Mules with 14 points. Gutierrez added 10 points for the Mules. Rodriguez finished with three points, and Velasquez chipped in one point.
