Varsity tennis

The Sudan varsity tennis competed at the district tennis meet in Levelland this past week.

“We endured the cold, rainy weather on Tuesday and traveled to Plainview on Thursday to finish the meet,” Head Coach Klark Ashmore said. “As a team, our boys team earned the District Championship and

the girls’ team played well and finished as the District Runner-Up.”

Sudan has five athletes, who qualified for Regionals. Julie Juarez and Meilynn Gonzales were the second place girls’ doubles team on the varsity and Anthony and Zoey Cantu won the championship in mixed doubles on the varsity. Noah Baker was the last man standing in the boys singles varsity division.

Brianna Wallace and Kamryn Goen finished fourth in varsity girls doubles, while Call Morris finished in third place in the boys’ singles division. Damon Boyd and Kobe Rodriguez came in third place and Ricky Torres and Isaiah Montes came in fourth place in boys’ doubles, both contributing to the district title on the varsity side.

Mildred Medrano battled through an ankle injury and finished fourth in the girls varsity singles division.

“We also had a very successful JV tournament,” the coach said. “In the boys doubles division, Carlos Alanis and Jesus Huerta finished in fourth place while Marian Ordonez and Madi Jennings came home with the second place medals in girls doubles.”

He added, “Before we even got off the bus on Tuesday, I challenged the kids to compete. No matter who they were playing against. I truly believe that everyone gave it there best and we were rewarded for it.”

The 2A Regional Tennis Meet will take place April 18th and 19th at Ratliff Sports Complex in Odessa.
