MISD Board reviews Comprehensive Safety Plan=

The regular meeting of the Muleshoe Independent School District Board of Trustees was held Monday, April 16. In addition to board members and Superintendent Dr. R.L. Richards, David Vela, Cindy Bessire, Greg Hill, the One-Act Play Team and the Mules Tennis Team attended the meeting.

The board recognized the One-Act Play students and the Mules Tennis Team that is advancing to Regionals.

Cindy Bessire the 2018-19 Muleshoe high school principal and Assistant Principal Greg Hill were introduced. Bessire returns to Muleshoe after a short stint in Denver City, and Hill is currently an assistant high school principal at Clovis High School.

David Vela provided a report on Board Policy CKC to allow staff to carry firearms as part of a Comprehensive Safety Plan for Muleshoe Schools. He showed a PowerPoint of signs posted at various school
districts and reviewed the policy again with the school board.

“It is all about keeping our students safe, even if we have to use firearms should an active shooter event occur. It is about prevention, deterring, and a rapid response to keep our students safe,” Vela said.

Vela and the board discussed a few items regarding future procedures. Vela, Sam Whalin and Richards will be attending Risk Management Training in Lubbock.

Budget Amendment #3 was passed and provided $25,000 for the purchase of more band instruments and $54,000 for Chromebook computers for each incoming freshman at the high school next year.

The final reading of Update 110 contained some clarification on policies from the state.

The board approved a three-year contract with Hilliard Office Machine Company in Lubbock.

The board reviewed the Tax Rate and State Revenues and compared them to the expenditures for next year. A more thorough review of the budget will be done before setting next year’s tax rate.

The policy for catastrophic insurance for student athletes was awarded to Caddell Insurance.

In the Formative Evaluation of Superintendent, the board reviewed the superintendent’s recent performance.

Resignations included Debbie Conner, Lindsey Ramage, Melissa York, Christy Wooldridge, Kay Griswold, Wendy Hollis and Ashleigh Harlow.

The Muleshoe Board of Trustees hired Cassidy Martin for Dillman Elementary School, Erin Fontana as FCCLA teacher at Muleshoe High School, Meagan Sorley as Junior High Science Teacher Lady Mules Coach Matt Villanueva as high school history teacher and football coach, Greg Hill as assistant principal at Muleshoe High School and Cody Johnson as high school math teacher.
