The Muleshoe Mules traveled to New Deal, Texas on Friday night to play in their first road game of the season. Unfortunately, they would take their second loss in a tough battle to the New Deal Lions.
The Mules would be receiving the ball to open the game. The kickoff would go to Senior WR Yoel Reyes, who would bring the ball out to the Muleshoe 28 yard line. Yoel Reyes would then take the first snap of the game in a “Mulecat” formation and puck up a short gain.
Senior QB Luke Del Toro would take over snaps in second down. He would throw a complete pass to Yoel Reyes for a first down. Then with a couple of incomplete passes and a short run from Junior RB Jesus Montiel, the Mules would be forced to punt. Senior RB Ryan Rodriguez would punt the ball over to the Lions and pin them back in their own territory.
New Deal would start their first drive from their own 22 yard line. Though, the Mules would fight hard, even with Junior WR Jimmy Villa forcing a fumble, only to have it recovered by the New Deal Lions. The Lions found themselves in the end zone on a five play, 78 yard drive.
With Junior RB Cristian Bustillos receiving the kickoff the Mules would start their second drive on their own 16 yard line. Having 7:50 left to play in the first quarter, the Mules would put up a six play drive only to be backed up and forced to punt from their own 10 yard line.
The Mules defense would then come up with a sack from Senior LB Corbin Hardwick and Senior LB Ean Hasley forced a fumble on New Deals next drive and recovered the ball for the Muleshoe offense. The Muleshoe offense would not be able to score. The Lions, however, would find the end zone once more before the end of the first quarter.
To start the second quarter the Lions would have possession only to have their end zone attempt broken up by the Mules defense. The second quarter would be a back and forth battle with only the Lions able to put up points before the end of the half, leaving to the locker room with a score of Mules 0, Lions 19.
The second half of the game would be a little different for the Mules. QB Luke Del Toro would hoop up with Senior WR Raul Sierra for a 25 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Senior WR Brady Martinez would add the extra point. Luke would then find Yoel Reyes in the fourth quarter on a five yard pass for a touchdown. Brady Martinez would add on the extra point. The Lions would find the end zone three more times before the game would end, bringing the game to a close with a final score of Mules 14, Lions 40. The Muleshoe Mules will host the Friona Chieftains for homecoming this Friday night.
