The Muleshoe High School junior varsity Mules played host to the River Road Wildcats on Saturday. The Mules came away with the win.
The Wildcats struck first to open the game but answered by the Mules’ Jimmy Villa hit a go ahead jump shot creating a 2-2 tie. River Road scored again but it was the last time they had the lead in the game.
Dok Gardner got fouled and tacked on a free throw with a quick steal from Braden Shipman and a dish to Adrian Bustillos. A. Bustillos went in for a layup creating a 5-4 lead for the Mules and the team never looked back. Cristian Bustillos and Brian Cruz both played good defense and developed a hot hand for the Mules. It helped bring the first quarter to an end with a 13-4 lead.
With tough defense and hustle offense from the Mules the second quarter did not get any easier for the Wildcats. The Mules went into halftime leading 25-11.
Jeremiah Barron opened the second half with a 3-point shot but the Mules were met with a tougher defense through the third quarter. River Road held the Mules to the team’s lowest-scoring quarter by allowing just 10 points. A. Busillos hit a 3-pointer to close out the quarter and bring the Mules 35-12 lead.
Braden Shipman added on two points to start the final quarter with his last two of six points on the night. C. Bustillos hit a jumper and tallied up his seven points. After a missed bucket, Brian Cruz grabbed the rebound and put it back up helping him lead the Mules with 13 points. A. Bustillos finished with seven points and Jimmy Villa with six. The Mules won the game 47-13.
