The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team saw their season come to an end Tuesday night at Slaton, as they fell to the Lockney Lady Horns, 49-46, in the Region I-2A Bi-district round of the play-offs.
The Nettes finished the season with a record of 15-13 overall, 4-4 in district play.
Ryann Castillo drained a three from the top of the key to open the scoring for Lockney, but on the other end, Liz Sital was fouled on a lay-up attempt by Townlei Hernandez. She split the free throws to make it a two-point game, 3-1, with 7:30 remaining in the opening-quarter.

POINTS IN THE PAINT – Sudan’s, Brianna Wallace (13), pulled up on the break for a jumper in the lane during the second half of the Nettes’ loss to the Lockney Lady Horns, 49-46, at Slaton in the 2A Bi-district round of the play-offs.

Zoey Cantu tossed a pass into Sital, who dropped in a lay-up to knot the game up, 3-3, but Lockney responded, as Reagan Nuncio banked in a three from the top of the key, regaining the lead for the Lady Horns, 6-3.
With 4:26 remaining in the first quarter, Nuncio scored a put-back off of the miss by Hernandez and Castillo followed it up with a three from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 11-3, with 3:50 to play in the quarter.
Brianna Wallace dropped in a bucket for Sudan and on the following play, Wallace scored a put-back off of her own miss on the outlet pass from Emma Herrera, cutting the lead to, 11-7.
With 2:56 to play in the quarter, Cantu was fouled on an attempt by Hernandez; she split the free throws to make it a three-point game, 11-8. Madai Chavira scored a lay-up for Lockney, drawing an and-one foul on Wallace. She converted the free throw to make it a two-possession game and on the following possession, she Chavira dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Castillo, pushing their lead to, 16-8. With time winding down in the quarter, Sital got the ball to Payton Tolbert, who drove the right baseline for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 16-10, as the first quarter came to a close.
Chavira gathered a loose ball and put it in for a lay-up to open the second quarter for Lockney, but Tolbert answered with a lay-up on the other end for Sudan, off of the assist from Cantu, making the score, 18-12. A steal by Tolbert led to a lay-up for Herrera off of the assist from Cantu, trimming the lead to four points, 18-14, with 6:10 remaining in the first half.
Tolbert took a charge on Chavira and the Nettes capitalized on the turnover, as Sital drew a shooting foul on Castillo. She converted both free throws to make it a one-possession game, 18-16.
Nuncio silenced the crowd with a three for Lockney, stretching the lead back out to, 21-16, as the Lady Horns called a time out with 4:57 to play in the second quarter.
Out of the break, after a pair of missed free throws by Nuncio, she made her presence felt on defense, as she forced a five-second call on the Nettes, regaining possession for Lockney.
Hernandez scored a lay-up off of a turnover by Sital and Chavira followed it up with a put-back off of the miss by Nuncio, stretching their lead to, 25-16, as the Nettes called a time out with 3:05 to play.
Out of the break, Chavira grabbed a defensive rebound for Lockney, but it was short-lived, as Tolbert took a charge to get the ball back for Sudan.
With 2:01 to play in the half, Tolbert was fouled on the floor by Castillo, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She made the first attempt, but missed the second, trimming the lead to, 25-17.
Kamryn Goen drew a block on a shooting attempt on Gabby Cervantes; she converted both free throws, making the score, 25-19, in favor of Lockney going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Tolbert was fouled on an attempt by Castillo, who picked up her fourth foul. Tolbert split the free throws and on the next possession, Goen was fouled on an attempt by Cervantes. She sank both free throws, slicing the lead to, 25-22, with just under seven minutes to play in the quarter.
Nuncio drove the lane for a lay-up and then followed it up by taking a charge on Tolbert on the defensive end to regain possession for Lockney with her team on top, 27-22.
With 5:13 to play in the third quarter, Goen was fouled on an attempt by Cervantes. She converted both free throws trimming the lead back down to three points, 27-24.
Nuncio answered two plays later, going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, but on the other end, Tolbert scored a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Herrera, drawing an and-one foul on Tanellie Bernal. She converted the free throw, keeping it a two-point game, 29-27.

With 3:08 to play in the quarter, Nuncio drove to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Goen. She sank the free throw, extending their lead to, 32-27. Cervantes knocked down a three from the left elbow off of the inbound pass from Nuncio and with just over one minute to play in the quarter, Hernandez was fouled on the floor by Tolbert. She made both ends of the one-in-one opportunity, pushing their lead to, 37-27.
Chavira was fouled on the floor by Herrera and split the free throws to push their lead to double digits, 38-27. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, Nuncio took a charge on Herrera and the Lady Horns capitalized on the turnover to close the quarter, as Chavira drew a shooting foul on Lauren Johnson. She split the free throws, bringing the third quarter to a close with Lockney out in front, 39-27.
Nuncio opened the fourth quarter with a tear drop in the lane, but Heidi Pinion answered with a lay-up off of a steal to trim the lead to, 41-29. Wallace got the ball to Sital in transition, who was fouled on the lay-up attempt, earning a pair of free throws. She knocked down both attempts at the line and followed them up by scoring a lay-up off of a steal on a fast break, cutting the lead to, 41-33, with 5:52 to play in the contest.
With 5:23 to play in the game, Goen drew a block on Hernandez, earning a one-in-one opportunity. She missed the free throw, but Sital was able to chase down the offensive rebound, as the Nettes took a time out with five minutes to play.
Out of the break, Cantu drove the lane on Castillo and dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 41-35, with 4:21 to play in the contest.
With 2:45 to play, Sital drew a shooting foul, putting her on the line for a pair of free throws. She sank the first free throw, as Lockney took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, she knocked down the second free throw, making it a four-point game, 41-37.
Bernal scored a lay-up off of the assist from Chavira, but on the other end, Goen was fouled on an attempt by Cervantes, who picked up he fourth foul. She split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 43-38, with 1:42 to play.
Just a few seconds later, Nuncio drew a shooting foul on Pinion, in the double bonus, she went to the line for a pair of free throws. She split the free throws and the defensive rebound was gathered by Cantu with the score, 44-38.
Sital was fouled on the floor by Chavira and sank both free throws, but on the other end, Hernandez was fouled on the floor by Tolbert sending her to the line for two free throws with 1:16 to play. She made one out of two at the line, making it a five-point game, 45-40.

Out of the break, Hernandez was fouled on the floor by Sital with 58 seconds remaining in the contest. She split the free throws, and on the other end, Goen dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Chavira. She missed the free throw and Cervantes was fouled on the defensive rebound by Sital, with the score, 46-44.
Cervantes made one out of two at the line, extending their lead to three points, 47-44, with 42.40 seconds remaining.
Wallace knocked down a short jumper in the lane for the Nettes, as they took a time out after the bucket with 33.91 to play, and the score, 47-46.
With 6.05 seconds to play, Nuncio drew a block on Cantu and Sank a pair of free throws to ice the game, 49-46, as they took down the Nettes in the 2A Bi-district round of the play-offs.
Sital led the Nettes in scoring with 13 points, while Goen netted 11 points and Tolbert chipped in nine points. Wallace contributed seven points, while Cantu tallied three points and Herrera and Pinion each finished with two points.
