The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team defeated the Amherst Bulldogs, 58-20 in summer league action on Tuesday at Wildcat Gym in Littlefield.
The Hornets got out to a quick start in the first half, as senior, Parker Battin, knocked down a jumper from the right wing and senior, Josh Leal, drove the lane and dumped the ball off to senior, Christian Montes, for a lay-up, putting them up, 4-0, to begin the game.
Alvaro got the Bulldogs on the board, as he caught an inbound pass from Isaac Herrera and knocked down the runner from the right side, trimming the lead to, 4-2, with 17:22 to play in the half.
Montes heaved an outlet pass down court to sophomore, Isaiah Cisneros, who dropped in the lay-up and drew an and-one foul on Sergio Gonzales, making the score, 7-2. Cisneros followed it up with a floater from the left side, but Amherst answered, as Miguel Rodriguez scored a put-back off of the miss by Herrera, cutting the lead to, 9-4.
With 13:47 remaining in the half, Montes launched a long pass to Cisneros, who drove the lane for a lay-up, but, the Bulldogs again had an answer, as Herrera knocked down a three from the left wing off of the assist from Gonzales, trimming the lead to, 11-7.
Cisneros came right back with a three of his own for Sudan and Montes dropped in a reverse lay-up off of a steal, stretching their lead to, 16-7. Gonzales was fouled on a put-back try by senior, Alex Conley; he converted the free throw, but Montes answered on the offensive end for the Hornets with a three-point play to make the score, 19-9.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the half, Alvaro Rodriguez knocked down a three for the Bulldogs, but Leal found the range for Sudan knocking down back-to-back threes, to extend their lead to, 25-12.
With just under three minutes to play in the half, Leal took the ball to the hoop for a lay-up and after a missed free throw from Michael Limon, Leal found the hoop again, this time driving the right side for a floater, pushing their lead to, 29-12. Cisneros picked up a steal from Herrera and took it the other way in transition for a lay-up to close out the first half with the Hornets out in front, 31-12.
Sudan got the scoring going in the second half, as Montes found Cisneros en route to the basket, who used a euro-step to finish the play with a lay-up, extending their lead to, 33-12.
Conley scored a lay-up, picking up the and-one foul on the play and then followed it up by going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, making the score, 38-12.
With 15:42 to play in the game, Conley was fouled on an attempt by Gonzales earning a trip to the line. He missed the free throw, but Montes was there for the offensive rebound and put-back, stretching the lead to, 40-12.
Montes hit Cisneros in transition with a long bounce pass for a lay-up and Conley followed suit with a three from the left wing off of the assist from Montes, pushing their lead out to, 45-12, with 13:48 to play in the game.
Montes found Garison Bohler in transition, who finished the play with a lay-up, but Alvaro Rodriguez dropped in a floater over Conley on the right side to end the scoring drought for Amherst, making the score, 47-14.
Conley and Miguel Rodriguez exchanged baskets and senior, Beto Mendoza, hit Montes, who then found Bohler for a lay-up off of an Amherst turnover, making the score, 51-16.
With under 10 minutes to play, Herrera was fouled on an attempt and converted the free throw, to trim the lead to, 51-18.
With just over five minutes to play in the contest, Leal passed the ball to Battin, who gave it right back to Leal on the give-and-go, as Leal finished the play with a floater as the Hornets added on to their lead.
Alvaro Rodriguez scored a lay-up off of a steal, but Battin answered with a put-back off of the miss by Cisneros, extending the lead to, 56-20.
Cisneros dropped in a lay-up as the Hornets closed out the Bulldogs, 58-20, in summer league action.
Cisneros led the Hornets in scoring with 20 points, while Leal netted 12 points and Conley added 10 points. Montes contributed nine points, while Battin added five points and Garison Bohler finished with four points.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Alvaro Rodriguez, who netted nine points. Herrera chipped in five points, while Miguel Rodriguez added four points and Gonzales finished with two points.
