The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team remained perfect on Friday night as they stung the Bovina Mustangs, 48-0, in their district opener.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 6-0 overall on the season, 1-0 in district play.
The Hornets totaled 424 yards of offense including 177 passing yards and 247 rushing yards.
Senior quarterback, Christian Montes, opened the game with a seven-yard rushing touchdown that was followed by the two-point conversion by Bode Box, making the score, 8-0. Montes added a 53-yard touchdown run to close out the first quarter and scored on the two-point conversion to extend their lead to, 16-0.
Montes opened the second quarter with a 27-yard pick-six. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving the score, 22-0.
Later in the second quarter, Montes connected with Lane Wilson for a 32-yard touchdown pass, pushing their lead to, 28-0. The Hornets would close out the first half, as Joe Limon caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Montes, making the score, 34-0, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Callen Cannon scored on a one-yard touchdown run for the lone score of the third quarter, and Parker Battin rushed for a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, as the Hornets took down Bovina, 48-0.
Montes finished the game 13-of-18 passing for 177 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 14 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns.
Cannon rushed 10 times for 32 yards and one touchdown, while Penrod added five carries for 11 yards.
In the receiving game, Limon led all receivers with two catches for 67-yards and one touchdown, while Lane Wilson added three catches for 32 yards and one touchdown. Brett Wilson chipped in three catches for 40 yards.
Defensively, Lane Wilson, Montes and Penrod each came away with an interception, while Montes was able to return his for a pick-six. Lane Wilson also came away with a fumble recovery, while they also had five tackles for loss in the contest.
Battin led the team in tackles with four solo and 13 assists, including one for loss. Damon Boyd chipped in two solo tackles, six assists, one sack and one two tackles for loss, while Brett Wilson notched two solo tackles and 13 assists. Alex Conley also had one sack and one tackle for loss to go along with six assists in the contest.
The Hornets will be at home to take on Seagraves next Friday, as District play continues.
Kick-off for that contest is slated for 7 p.m.
