At a dedication and groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, June 29, the MISD Board of Trustees honored retiring Assistant Superintendent Dani Heathington and revealed that the new multipurpose facility on MISD campus will be named after her.
In a video from Gil Lamb Advertising posted on the MISD Facebook site, Curtis Preston, president of the MISD Board of Trustees, praised Heathington for her grit and determination, saying that while she was a young mother, Heathington decided to go back to school and earn her degree.
MISD Facilities Director Chad Beall described the building as an indoor training facility with a 65-yard turf field under a roof with an indoor walking track around it for use by multiple groups.
“The band will be able to practice year-round in the facility; the baseball and softball teams will be able to practice simultaneously in the facility,” he said. “There’s a net in the middle that drops down which allows student teams to practice at the same time.”
Batting cages allow teams to have batting practice at the same time, the golf team can practice their drives and, of course, the football team can practice.
“Just about any activity that we have here in the district, we can practice or use the facility for that,” Beall said.
The front of the facility will contain a conference room with a capacity of 120 to 125 people. The room will be equipped with computers, Wi-Fi and projectors.
“The north side of it is glass windows, so if any homecoming class wanted to have a homecoming meal in that facility, they would be able to sit in there and watch a Friday night football game from inside that facility through the glass windows that face the field,” Beall said.
The facility has a small serving area, bathrooms and storage for athletic equipment.
“It’s kind of all nice and neat and tucked in there,” Beall said.
