The 2022-2023 regular season officially came to an end last week as teams battled it out either for district championships or playoff positions. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches released their final rankings for the girls’ teams the week prior and the boys’ teams Monday morning.
Boys
1A Nazareth Swifts
Nazareth slid down one spot in the final TABC rankings from 5th to 6th in 1A. The Swifts completed their final regular season game on Feb. 10 with a blowout win over Hart. The Swifts finished their regular season undefeated in district play, claiming another district title. The Swifts played a playoff practice game against Stratford and fell 37-30.
The Swifts started the year as a top team in 1A and have moved around the top 10 throughout the season. Nazareth put together wins against ranked opponents Gruver (No. 16 in 2A) and Clarendon (No. 19 in 2A).
2A Floydada Whirlwinds
Floydada jumped up one more position in the final TABC rankings from 12th to 11th after closing their regular season with a pair of wins.
Floydada earned an important win over ranked opponent Olton to help boost their position in the playoff seeding and their state ranking.
The Whirlwinds began the year unranked. As the year progressed, they took down multiple ranked teams to earn their No. 11 position in 2A. Floydada earned wins over ranked opponents Lorenzo (No. 15 in 1A), New Deal twice (No. 18 in 2A), McMullen County twice (No. 3 in 1A) and Olton twice (No. 13 in 2A).
2A Farwell Steers
Farwell maintained their rank as a top-three team in the state, sitting third in the 2A rankings.
The Steers wrapped up their regular season with a 57-51 win over Bovina. They finished undefeated in district play and secured a district championship.
Farwell put together an impressive resume on their path to a top three spot in the 2A state rankings. The Steers secured wins over ranked opponents Texline (No. 5 in 1A), New Home (No. 5 in 2A), Olton (No. 13 in 2A) and Nazareth (No. 6 in 1A).
2A New Deal Lions
New Deal maintained their position at No. 18 in 2A after a pair of wins over Lockney and Springlake-Earth to end their regular season.
New Deal started the season as a top 10 team in 2A and finished the year with a ranked win over Reagan County (No. 4 in 2A).
2A Olton Mustangs
For the second week in a row, the Mustangs maintained their No. 13 position in 2A despite a close loss to No. 11 ranked Floydada.
The Mustangs shared the district 4-2A title with the Whirlwinds after a 13-1 district record before their playoff seeding game.
Olton put together a couple of wins against ranked opponents to push the Mustangs into the top 25. Those wins include Floydada (No. 11 in 2A) and two wins over New Deal (No. 18 in 2A).
3A Shallowater Mustangs
Shallowater remained the No. 6 team in 3A in the final TABC rankings. The Mustangs finished their regular season with a win over Abernathy for a share of the district 2-3A title.
The Mustangs were a top-three team in 3A throughout most of the regular season with a late loss to Childress bumping them outside of the top five. Shallowater earned a couple of wins against ranked opponents throughout the regular season including Nazareth (No. 6 in 1A) and Childress (No. 5 in 3A).
