Muleshoe Public Library is celebrating National Library Week from April 23-28 with a celebration at 4 p.m. Friday, April 28, Patron Appreciation Day.

“We want to take a moment to thank our patrons that come in and support us, that use us as a resource,” said Library Director Frances Recio.

Kids will not be forgotten, especially since April 30 is Día de los niños/ Dia de los Libros or Day of the Child/Day of the Book.

“We’ll have snacks, games and book giveaways,” Recio said.

The purpose behind the fun is to encourage parents to read to their children, to get books into children’s hands and to put books in children’s homes.

Library staff is particularly excited about the “Which Book?” game.

“Self-standing grocery bags are being decorated with questions marks,” Recio said. “Inside are clues that lead kids to guess the name of the book. For example, if it’s a Harry Potter book, we might have an owl and magical items like hats or wands. If they guess right, they win one of the books.

“The kids get excited trying to guess, and it turns into a really cool thing. We’ll have at least 15 clue bags, or, if the staff gets really enthusiastic, we might have 20.”

Whether or not a kid wins a game, all of them will go home with a book in their hands.

“We’re looking at Scholastic to purchase a lot of books with the same titles so we’ll get a lot of basic books into homes,” Recio said.

Since the library is within walking distance of the elementary school and the activity is at 4 p.m., Recio expects many schoolchildren to participate.

“Teachers have been bringing their book clubs to the library, and they’ve been displaying their projects during the school year, so attendance looks promising,” Recio said. “I think it’s going to grow this year. We want them to be excited about reading.”

The month of May will kick off with School Lunchroom Day on Friday, May 5.

“That’s the day we recognize our school lunchroom staff and make sure they know they’re very important people,” Recio said.

The day coincides with Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 6.

“Mr. Robert Mora of Star Comics in Lubbock is going to provide us with free comic books this year,” Recio said. “We’ll give them out free of charge to our patrons and to anyone from the surrounding area that comes in and requests a comic book.”
