Mules Open Season At Hale Center

The Mules opened there basketball season on the road in Hale Center against the Owls. The Owls started fast but the Mules caught up before the half and went on for the win 57-48. Over the weekend the Mules competed in the Nazareth Invitational Tournament.

The Owls flew out of the gate and had claimed a 13-9 lead over the Mules by the time the first period ended. Jason Florez stole the ball from the Owls in the first two minutes of the second period and converted each steal to a basket. The Mules led 15-13 with just over six minutes left in the half.

Dagen Dunham sank the Mules first 3-pointer of the season from the right wing. Florez tossed a high pass to Dunham in the lane. Dunham leaped high in the air and tipped the ball in the hoop.

|The Owls scored twice at the end of the second period to ease in front of the Mules 25-23.

Lady Mules Fall To Hale Center Owls

The JV Lady Mules jumped on the Hale Center Owls early and went on to clip the Owls 44-19 Tuesday night.

\Friday night the Lady Mules were at Lubbock High battling a 5-A team.

he game with the Lady Westerners was nip and tuck to the very end. The Westerners took the night 38-33.

“The girls went to Hale Center with ‘pay back’ on their minds and delivered,” said JV Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “We allowed only six points in the second half.”

“Marissa Reyes was a huge factor under the basket and yanked down several rebounds and went back up and scored. Her teammate Brittney Mendoza was shooting lights out all night. I loved the enthusiasm and ’pumped up’ attitudes.”

Tough Loss For JH Lady Mules In Friona

The eighth grade Lady Mules visited Friona Monday. The Maidens all but shut out the Lady Mules in the second quarter and eked out a 26-25 win over the Lady Mules.

“My girls played their hears out from the first quarter to the last,” said Lady Mule coach Jalissa King. “We just could not get our shots to fall.”

The Lady Mules took an 8-7 lead into the second period. That was when the rim really got stingy and the Maidens open a 14-11 lead by the intermission.

The Lady Mules got tied the game at 19-19 with one period left to play. Friona out scored the Lady Mules 5-4 in the final period.

JV Mules Defeat Hale Center Owls

The JV Mules defeated the Hale Center Owls Tuesday evening in their only contest of the week.

The Owls scored first but the Mules rallied back with Javy Perez dropping in a baseline jump shot. The rolled on to defeat the Owls 29-21.

Tim Perez added a bucket in the lane. Antonio Vasquez made the inbound pass to Jesse Leal for a bucket to extend the Mule lead to 6-1 but the Owls scored before the period ended.

Freshman Mules Suffer Defeat

The freshmen Mules had a tough third period against the Friona Braves Monday evening. The Mules made a run at making up the difference in the final quarter but the Braves hung on for a 45-41 win over the Mules.

Mikey Lozano drove coast-to-coast for the first points of the game. Brendon Rodriquez finished a fast break to tie the game. The game was back and forth with the Mules taking a 14-13 advantage after one quarter.

The second period was more of the same and the Mules managed to hold the one point advantage to lead 21-20 at the half.

The Braves got on a run in the third period and scored the first seven points to lead 27-21. Lozano scored the Mules first bucket with 3:33 left in the third quarter. The Braves had built a 36-26 lead over the Mules with one quarter left to play.

Lozano drove the baseline for a hoop to open the fourth period. Jacob Kettner was fouled shooting and made one free throw. Rodriguez scored on an inbound play to cut the Brave lead to 37-31.

Lozano drove the floor for a hoop. The next trip down the floor Lozano got Rodriguez the ball on the blocks for a basket to cut the Friona lead to 37-35. Joseph Rejino tied the game from the elbow.

Rodriguez was fouled shooting and made both free throws to give the Mules a brief lead at 39-37. The Braves took the lead on an old-fashion three-point play and never gave it up in the final two and half minutes of the game.

Lozano paced the Mules with 18 points and Rodriguez finished with 16. Rejino added five points and Kettner chipped in two points.

Eighth Grade Mules Defeat Friona's Braves

The eighth grade Mules opened their home basketball season Monday evening against the Friona Braves. The Mules raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first period and coasted to a 39-24 win over Friona.

Ean Hasley got the Mules started with a 10-foot baseline jumper. Izaiah Hurtado added a basket as the Mules began to pile on the Braves. Hurtado went coast-to-coast for a lay up.

Brady Martinez made a half-court pass to Israel Vasquez racing down the floor. The Mules led 10-2 with 45 seconds on the clock. Friona scored just prior to the buzzer sounding.

Luke Del Toro fed Luke Leal for under the hoop for a point-blank shot. Leal then scored from the elbow. Ethan Villa picked a Brave’s pocket and pushed the ball ahead to Hurtado for a lay up. The Mules led 20-10 at the intermission.

The Mules out scored the Braves 14-5 in the third period to cement the win.

Hurtado led the Mules with 12 points as all 10 Mules scored in the game. Hasley finished with six points. Vasquez and Martinez dropped in four points each. Ryan Rodriquez, Del Toro, Josh Torres, Villa and Raul Sierra chipped in two points apiece.

The Mules traveled to Tulia Monday and then go to Shallowater Dec. 15.

7th Grade Mules Stomp The Chieftains

The seventh Mules completely shut out the Friona Braves in the opening period Monday afternoon and cruised to a 47-16 win. Nine Mules scored in the contest.

Damian Juarez opened the first period by grabbing a Mule rebound and put the ball back up and in the hoop. Hector Arras scored on an inbound play. Derek Barron led a fast break for a hoop.

Jimmy Villa was running on a break for a hoop and Cristian Bustillos put back a rebound. Eddie Vasquez scored to end the first period with the Mules leading 10-0.
