Muleshoe continued to display their dominance on both sides of the ball Friday night.

Abernathy hosted Muleshoe for their homecoming game and it was as one sided as it can probably get. The Mules defense swarmed Abernathy throughout the game, holding them to quick drives and allowing no big plays down the field.

“I was really proud of our kids. This is a tough place to play at. Abernathy’s an outstanding football team and they’re going to have a great season,” Muleshoe Head Coach Jason Richards said.

The Mules continue their perfect season, advancing to 5-0 with the 47-0 victory. This game somehow marks the lowest Mules have scored in a game this season.

With each defensive drive, each player seemingly was reacting quicker and quicker and in turn, turned into forced turnovers. The Muleshoe defense was responsible for three interceptions including one by Josue Sigala who returned one 65 yards for a touchdown in the second half. The Antelopes had only two drives reach the endzone, one by way of a fumble by Muleshoe quarterback Nathan Martens on their own 20-yard line. The other came in the final drive of the game during garbage time. In both situations, the Mules put together goal line stands and prevented a single point from appearing on the home-side scoreboard.

On offense, it was business as usual. The Mules were able to rely on the running back duo of Sigala and Sianez to churn out big runs left and right. It seemed each play they were able to gain two, three, four and more yards after initial contact. Richards gave kudos to his offensive line in helping create the rushing lanes.

“Our offensive line is playing really good right now,” Richards said. “We were able to run the football and it’s nice to be able to throw the football when you want to throw the football.”

Sigala and Sianez combined for over 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the contest. Sianez averaged nearly nine yards per carry while Sigala averaged a whopping 13 yards per carry. Sigala’s number is a little more inflated due to a 72-yard score in which he got the outside edge and outran the entire Abernathy defense in a statement score for the Mules.

“Josue is a freshman, and he is probably one of the smartest football players I have ever coached,” Richards said. “He’s really a student of the game and really understands football.”

Abernathy was held to just 223 yards of total offense and gave up nearly 500 yards on defense. Lance Ponciano led the way for the Antelopes’ rushing attack with 60 yards. Wideout Levi Carrillo had a busy game as well, catching six passes 72 yards.

While many teams around the area will be entering their open week next week, the Mules have one more opportunity to prepare for district play as they take on Brownfield on the road next Friday.
